Congratulations, mum-to-be! The moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived – those one, two, three pregnancy tests have all given you the joyful news: you’re positively pregnant!
Get ready for your first GP appointment
Now, let’s embark on this exciting journey together and uncover the steps you’ll be taking as an expectant mum in the United Kingdom. And guess what? We’re kicking things off with your very first GP appointment. Ready? Let’s dive in!
Step 1: Reach out to your GP practice
It’s your first exciting step – give your GP practice a call or hop online to secure your appointment as soon as you discover the wonderful news. Sometimes, scheduling might take a couple of weeks, so don’t waste a moment and dive right into action.
Step 2: The first GP appointment
This is where things get rolling! Your initial visit with the doctor will be a swift one. They’ll inquire about your last menstrual cycle date, which means you should have the first day of your most recent period noted down. Keep that important detail handy for this appointment. Don’t worry if you’re not certain; providing an estimated date that’s as close to reality as possible is key.
Interestingly, during my experience, I found it pleasantly surprising that no tests were required at this point. I shared my positive results from the three pregnancy tests I had taken, and that was sufficient for them to guide me towards a Maternity Unit. They also inquired about my hospital preference for follow-up, and that summed up the appointment.
Step 3: You got mail
Keep an eye on your mailbox – a letter will be making its way to you, outlining details about your hospital appointment. Typically scheduled between 6 to 10 weeks (especially if this is your first pregnancy and there are no reasons for concern), this upcoming visit will probably involve your initial scan. Brace yourself to witness the first glimpses and sounds of your little bundle of joy. More about this exciting chapter will be unveiled in an upcoming article.
